2. current and wind

It is necessary to separate the acting loads into static and dynamic loads, since the probabilistic part of the analysis is concerned only with the fluctuating part of the local stresses. There are two criteria which may be applied in making this distinction. As the obviously dominant dynamic forces are those produced by wave action, load can be considered static or constant for the purpose of a fatigue analysis if:

- The rate of variation is slow compared with periods of the wave components in a natural sea state, or
- The effect of the variation is small in magnitude relative to the effect of the waves.

Current forces fall into the first category and wind gust forces and variable operational loads fall into the second. On this basis, it is evident that only wave forces need be considered as variable loads. Therefore, the usual design loads may be divided into the following load sets:

Static Loads : Gravity Forces, Buoyancy Forces, Operational Loads, Wind Forces, Current Forces
Dynamic Loads : Wave Forces
